ADDS DELEGATE TOTALS; Graphic shows current status of the GOP presidential nomination race

(AP) ? On the eve of their Super Tuesday showdown, Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum strained for an edge in Ohio on Monday and braced for the 10 primaries and caucuses likely to redefine the race for the Republican presidential nomination.

Newt Gingrich, though winless for more than a month, campaigned in Tennessee and issued a stream of signals that he intended to stay in the race.

In a race marked by unpredictability, Romney's superior organization and the support of an especially deep-pocketed super PAC allowed him to compete all across the Super Tuesday landscape and potentially pick up more than half of the 419 delegates at stake.

Santorum cast the race in biblical terms, his David vs. Romney's Goliath. Even that "is probably a little bit of an understatement," he added.

By contrast, Romney projected confidence. "I hope that I get the support of people here in Ohio tomorrow, and in other states across the country. I believe if I do, I'll get the nomination," he said.

Primaries in Ohio, Georgia, Massachusetts, Vermont, Virginia, Oklahoma and Tennessee plus caucuses in Idaho, North Dakota and Alaska make Tuesday the busiest day of the primary season.

Unlike previous Republican campaigns, when a primary winner would typically win all of a state's delegates, allocations this year generally reflect the split in the popular vote. As a result, several candidates may be able to claim success once the Super Tuesday results are known.

Romney kept his focus on the economy in a final sprint across Ohio, the state that has drawn the most attention and television advertising. Pre-primary polls show him with momentum in a close race with Santorum.

"Other people in this race have debated about the economy, they've read about the economy, they've talked about it in subcommittee hearings," Romney said dismissively of his opponents. "But I've actually been in it. I've worked in business, and I understand what it takes to get a business successful and to thrive."

Santorum, who narrowly lost Michigan to Romney last week, said that no matter how much his rival spends, "conservatives will not trust him, will not rally around him this primary season. ... We will be the nominee."

He said he looked forward to the day when Gingrich drops out and clears the way for him to challenge Romney one-on-one. "And when we do that, we'll win," Santorum said.

Gingrich, the former speaker of the House, was having none of it.

Seemingly confident of a primary victory in Georgia, where he launched his political career more than three decades ago, he unveiled a new television commercial in Tennessee promising to reduce the rising cost of gasoline. Eager to demonstrate his staying power, he said the commercial would soon begin running in Alabama and Mississippi, which hold primaries next week, and he announced a list of supporters in Kansas, where caucuses are on the schedule for Saturday.

Gingrich linked oil, Iran and war in remarks at a rally in Alcoa, Tenn. "We should indicate calmly and decisively that any threat to close the Straits of Hormuz would be considered an act of war and we will eliminate the government of Iran," he said. About 20 percent of the world's oil exports pass through the Straits of Hormuz.

The fourth man in the race, Texas Rep. Ron Paul, campaigned in Idaho after a weekend visit to Alaska, where he hopes to claim his first victory of the campaign.

Romney has won four contests in a row, including a double-digit victory in Washington state caucuses on Saturday.

He has 203 delegates in the Associated Press count, while Santorum has 92, Gingrich 33 and Paul 25.

It takes 1,144 to win the nomination at the convention in Tampa, Fla., next summer.

Romney's itinerary on Monday underscored the extent to which the campaign for the nomination has changed from closely watched statewide contests into to an all-out battle for individual delegates. While he hoped to win the Ohio primary outright, he arranged stops in Canton and Youngstown, in and around areas where Santorum isn't eligible for all the delegates available on Tuesday.

Santorum was hampered by his failure to file any delegates in three of the state's 16 congressional districts. That meant he was forfeiting any chance at nine of the 63 at stake, even if he won statewide.

More damaging to their hopes of stopping Romney, Santorum and Gingrich failed to qualify for the Virginia primary ballot, and Romney appeared in line to capture all 46 delegates there. The former Massachusetts governor also has virtually no competition on his home turf in that state, with 38 delegates, and little in Vermont, with 17 more.

Romney pressed his advantage in other ways, from personal endorsements to a huge disparity in television ads across the country.

One day after winning the support of House Majority Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia and Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn, he drew backing from former Attorney General John Ashcroft. Romney has long claimed he is the most electable of all the Republicans in the race, and the endorsements were a fresh sign that the party establishment has begun to rally to his side.

While Santorum recently reported taking in $9 million in campaign donations in February, he was outspent across the board on television.

Romney purchased about $1.5 million in television commercials in Ohio, and Restore our Future, the super PAC that supports him, spent even more, $2.3 million.

Santorum and Red, White and Blue, a super PAC that backs him, countered with about $1 million combined, according to information on file with the Federal Election Commission, a deficit of nearly 4-1.

In Tennessee, where Romney did not purchase television time, Restore Our Future spent more than $600,000 to help him. Santorum paid for a little over $225,000, and Winning our Future, a super PAC that backs Gingrich, nearly $470,000.

In Georgia, where Gingrich acknowledged he must win, the pro-Romney super PAC spent about $1.5 million in hopes of holding the former House speaker below 50 percent of the vote, the threshold needed to maximize his delegate take.

Is this Britain's most selfless mother? Julie Jones took in her late ...

By Polly Dunbar

Last updated at 10:40 PM on 3rd March 2012

The mantelpiece in Julie Jones?s living room is crammed with pink, sparkly birthday cards. At the centre are two with the word ?Daughter? written across the front. One is addressed ?To my beautiful Emma?, the other ?To my beautiful Chantelle?. Both are signed ?With lots and lots of love and kisses, Julie?.

At a glance, they reveal Julie?s remarkable devotion to these two little girls who aren?t, in the strictest sense, her daughters.

Their real mother, Caroline Atkin, died of cancer two years ago, six months after their father also died suddenly.

One big happy family: Julie with Michael, 12, James, 10, Keiran, 11, Emma, eight, and Chantelle, six - the children of her late best friend Caroline Atkin who she has adopted

One big happy family: Julie with Michael, 12, James, 10, Keiran, 11, Emma, eight, and Chantelle, six ? the children of her late best friend Caroline Atkin who she has adopted

She had been Julie?s best friend for 30 years? and it was their incredible bond that led Julie to promise Caroline she would take in not only Chantelle, who was five, and Emma, who was seven, but also their three brothers ? James, eight, Keiran, nine, and Michael, ten. Overnight Julie ? already single-handedly bringing up three teenage boys ? became a mother of eight.

Somehow, despite her own grief, she had to find the space for all the children, and juggle working full-time as an RAF administrator with looking after them. It was an act of tremendous loyalty and kindness for which Julie, 46, has received the accolade of Tesco Compassionate Mum of the Year, which she will receive next Sunday at a ceremony in London.

The challenge might easily have daunted a lesser woman, but for Julie, who exudes an aura of calm, gentle capability, it was a simple decision.

?I never wonder for a second if I did the right thing. There was never any question. What kind of a friend would I have been if I?d turned my back on Caroline?s children? I couldn?t have lived with myself.?

At the heart of Julie?s extraordinary situation is a friendship that began? in 1979 when she was 11, and lasted through jobs, marriages and babies.

She and Caroline met on the first day at their Catholic secondary school in Grantham, Lincolnshire. Julie lived in Sleaford, 15 miles away, and turned up without knowing anyone.

?Caroline included me in her group of friends,? Julie recalls. ?From that day, we shared everything ? French exchange trips, trips to the youth club and, later, the disco. It was the Eighties and we?d spend hours round at her house listening to music, dressing up and plastering on make-up together.?

They were so close that, after leaving school, they both went to a local college to study the same hotel and catering management course.

Julie later began working at the RAF College at nearby Cranwell and Caroline found a job in Lincoln.

When Julie married in 1988, Caroline was her bridesmaid. Julie and her RAF husband ? who divorced seven years ago ? moved around the country but often invited Caroline to visit.

In 1998, Julie was maid of honour when Caroline married David Atkin, a caretaker with whom she already had two children. She went on to have three more, with Julie as godmother.

?They were a devoted couple,? says Julie. ?Caroline lived for him and? the children.?

At the start of 2009, Caroline began to suffer headaches. She tripped and fell on more than one occasion, so Julie encouraged her to visit the doctor. Then one morning, at Easter, Julie? received a call from David to say Caroline had been suffering seizures and had been admitted to hospital.

?They operated straight away to remove part of a brain tumour and, when I got there, she was drifting in and out of consciousness. I knew it was very serious. Dave was distraught. I told him I?d do everything I possibly could to support them.?

Over the following months, with Julie by her side, Caroline received chemotherapy, but it became clear she would not survive.

Then, suddenly, just before Christmas 2009, David collapsed on Lincoln high street, having suffered a massive stroke which Julie believes? was stress-related. On January 8, 2010, he died.

?Caroline called me and said, ?It?s my husband, he?s died,? which was an odd thing to say. She was at home and on very strong medication, so I don?t think she quite understood what had happened. I was absolutely stunned.?

At Easter, Julie went to Caroline?s house with eggs for the children and, as the children played outside, Caroline broke down. Julie says: ?She couldn?t bear the thought of leaving the kids, so she never discussed dying, but that day she said, ?I?m so scared for my life.?

?I told her she would be fine and? she said, ?What about the children??? I said they?d be fine too.

?She said, ?Will you look after them for me?? I said, ?Yes. Let?s call that Plan B.?

?I wanted her to have that hope because I knew that was how she was coping. I wasn?t surprised she had asked, and I didn?t even have to think about it. I knew she would do the same for me.?

Caroline had no other relatives aside from her elderly mother, Irene, who gave Julie her blessing that afternoon. Caroline and Julie visited a solicitor to make arrangements for Julie to be the children?s legal guardian in the event of Caroline?s death.

The following month, Julie invited the whole family to stay at her new four-bedroom house in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, for a week.

While Caroline rested, Julie organised picnics and barbecues and a birthday party for Keiran, who had just turned ten.

During the week, Julie noticed that Caroline had started to direct her children?s requests for drinks or to play outside to her. ?I think she was handing me her children,? says Julie. ?She seemed at peace with it. I?m so glad we had that week, so she could see life would be OK for the kids.?

Tragic: The children were left orphaned after both their parents died within six months in 2010

Caroline died the following Monday, on June 7. A family friend was looking after her children at home. Julie arrived at the hospital ten? minutes after her friend died. ?She would have laughed and said, ?You?re always late,??? she says.

?The children had no idea that their mummy was dying, so I had to tell them she was gone and that she was with the angels in heaven.

?I said, ?Who wants to come home with me?? and they all said, ?I do.???

During the first few days, Julie?s mother helped to take care of the children while she organised? Caroline?s funeral and underwent checks by social services.

When she got the children home, Julie was faced with immediate practical difficulties. With two? double and two single bedrooms, fitting everyone in was a struggle.

?I moved the table out of the living room and set up camp beds for the girls. Then someone arrived with a tent. It was summer, so I let the boys sleep in it in the garden,? she says.

?Adam, my eldest, went to university a bit early so we could use his room. I put bunk beds and a single bed in there for the boys, and the girls have bunks in the dining room. Adam has to sleep on the sofa when he comes home for the holidays.?

The maturity with which Julie?s three children, Adam, now 21, Peter, 19, and Christian, 14, have coped with the upheaval is a credit to them and her. When she told them Caroline was dying, they needed no prompting to suggest the children come to live with them.

?They?ve been brilliant,? says Julie. ?Christian has moaned every now and then, saying, ?The little weasels have been in my room,? but they?ve been very tolerant. They?re older but I make sure nothing?s been taken from them apart from space.?

Although Caroline?s children felt comfortable with Julie from the start, the loss of their mother had inevitable consequences.

?Michael was being sick a lot for the first three months, I think because of the shock. Emma had temper tantrums. The younger boys had trouble sleeping and Chantelle was very clingy.

?I noticed that every reading book they brought home from school seemed to be about Mummy and Daddy. There were a lot of difficult moments. But gradually, with a lot of love and care, they settled down.

?I try to keep things simple,? she says. ?I say to them, ?This is a calm house. We?ve only got each other so we have to get along.? I insist on good manners and respect.

?The girls are in bed by seven and the boys by eight. We read together and they aren?t allowed to watch TV during the week. At first they were quite behind at school, but they?ve done really well. They work hard to make me proud.?

Julie talks about Caroline and David with the children often to ensure they will never be forgotten. She marks Caroline?s birthday by taking them all on a trip to the seaside and, during the holidays, the children, now aged seven, nine, ten 11 and 12, visit Irene.

?I?ve made memory boxes for all? of them with the few bits and pieces I salvaged from Caroline?s house ? a few pictures and pieces of jewellery. I?m also filling them with new, happy memories, like pictures from our trips together, trying to make their lives as normal as possible.????

Memories: Caroline Atkin sits left, with her five children and Julie, standing. Caroline died from a brain tumor shortly after this picture was taken

Memories: Caroline Atkin sits left, with her five children and Julie, standing. Caroline died from a brain tumor shortly after this picture was taken

She receives child benefit, but nothing else, and works 40 hours a week to make ends meet, with the children going to an after-school club. She says she has been advised to move into a council house and claim? benefits, but has refused.

?A lot of days I?m exhausted because I work a full day and then I come home and have to start again with cooking, cleaning and washing. I have to keep a diary to remember everything all the kids are supposed to be doing every day.

?Family and friends help out with childcare and shopping, and bring round clothes for the children, and people at work have been brilliant.??

Julie is thrilled to be receiving her award from Fiona Phillips at the Waldorf Hilton Hotel next weekend, after being nominated by a friend. The entire family are travelling with her to London.

?It?s lovely to be rewarded for what I?ve done for the kids, and the weekend will be a real treat because I don?t get much time for pampering any more,? she says.

?To me, I did what anybody would do in my place. I?ve gained so much from it because the children are wonderful. I love them, and as far as I?m concerned they?re mine.

?I miss Caroline so much. I can hear her voice crystal-clear in my memory. But she lives on through them, so I?ll always have a part of her.?

Red Cross, Syria in standoff as shelling restarts

An aid convoy has been refused access to Baba Amr district of Homs, where residents have been without water for the last four days. Elsewhere in Syria, there have been anti-government protests following Friday prayers. Human rights campaigners claim that 13 people were killed when troops fired a mortar into a crowd of demonstrators in the town of Rastan. Britain's Channel Four News correspondent Carl Dinnen reports.

By msnbc.com news services

Armed forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad on Saturday bombarded the Jobar residential neighborhood of Homs, where a standoff continued between a Red Cross convoy and the government that has blocked the delivery of food, medical supplies and blankets to the thousands still stranded in the area.

Thousands of civilians from another area overrun by the army have taken refuge in the neighborhood, an opposition activist organization said.

"In an act of pure revenge, Assad's army has been firing mortar rounds and ... machine guns since this morning at Jobar. We have no immediate reports of casualties because of the difficulty of communications," the Syrian Network for Human Rights said in statement.

Jobar is adjacent to the district of Baba Amr in Homs, from where Free Syrian Army rebels pulled out this week after almost a month of army shelling. Activists reported mass executions by loyalist troops who subsequently entered the area.

The Local Coordination Committees activist network said mortars slammed into Khaldiyeh, Bab Sbaa and Khader districts of the city early Saturday.

Red Cross supplies arrived in the stricken Syrian city of Homs on Friday as evidence mounted of its humanitarian crisis after a month of bombardment from President Bashar Assad's forces. ITV's Paul Davies reports.

Graphic: The siege of Homs

Abu Hassan al-Homsi, a doctor at a makeshift clinic in Khaldiyeh district of Homs, said he treated a dozen wounded.

"This has become routine, the mortars start falling early in the morning," he said. Several homes were damaged from the morning shelling, which he described as steady but intermittent. Most of those he treated were lightly wounded, al-Homsi added.

Aid convoy blocked
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said Saturday it was still negotiating with Syrian authorities who have denied its aid convoy access to the shattered Baba Amr district.

An ICRC convoy of seven trucks carrying food and other life-saving relief supplies, joined by Red Crescent ambulances to evacuate the sick and wounded, has been stalled in the city of Homs since arriving there on Friday.

Red Cross convoy prevented from entering former Syrian rebel stronghold

"The ICRC and Syrian Red Crescent are not yet in Baba Amr today (Saturday). We are still in negotiations with authorities in order to enter Baba Amro. It is important that we enter today," ICRC spokesman Hicham Hassan told Reuters in Geneva.

ICRC President Jakob Kellenberger, in a statement issued on Friday after waiting all day for Syrian authorities to grant entry to the team, said the delay was "unacceptable" as civilians had waited for weeks for emergency assistance.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said on Friday he had received "grisly reports" Syrian government forces were arbitrarily executing, imprisoning and torturing people in the battle-scarred city of Homs after rebel fighters had fled.

'Terrorist' suicide bombs
Meanwhile, the Syrian state news agency Sana reported Saturday that a suicide bomber killed two people and wounded several others in the southern town of Deraa.

"The terrorist explosion led to the martyrdom of two citizens," the agency said.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also reported that at least two people were killed and several others wounded in the explosion.

Syrians flee to northern Lebanon

Syria has seen a string of suicide bombings, the last on Feb. 10, when twin suicide bombs struck security compounds in the government stronghold city of Aleppo, killing 28 people and bringing significant violence for the first time to the city.

The capital Damascus, another stronghold of Assad's, has seen three suicide bombings in the past two months.

The regime has touted the attacks as proof that it is being targeted by "terrorists." The opposition accuses forces loyal to the government of being behind the bombings to tarnish the uprising.

Saturday's bombing in Deraa marked the first time a suicide bombing struck an opposition stronghold. Daraa is the birthplace of the nearly year-old uprising against Assad. The revolt has killed more than 7,500 people, according to most recent U.N. estimates.
