MARIANNA, Florida (Reuters) ? A Cuban spy convicted of infiltrating a Cuban exile organization in Florida was released from a U.S. jail early on Friday after serving 13 years of his 15-year-sentence, his lawyer said.
"He was released earlier today," attorney Philip Horowitz told Reuters, saying Rene Gonzalez left the Marianna prison in the Florida Panhandle at around 4 a.m. EDT.
Gonzalez, the first to be freed out of the so-called "Cuban Five" group of jailed agents arrested in 1998, is still required to spend three years of supervised probation in the United States. Cuba has criticized this condition and demanded he be allowed to immediately return to the communist island.
