Workplace Communication ? The Right Questions to Ask for Self ...

Workplace Communication ? The Right Questions to Ask for Self Development and Success

Questions are better than answers ? when they are the right questions. Answers to poor questions yields feeble and often useless answers. During my years as a sales manager I often heard myself asking, ?What?s the real question?? when an employee asked me what I could sense was an off-target question. So, what are the right questions to ask at work?

Use the list below to generate even more of the real questions:

1. What can I do right now to change (or correct) things?

Ask this question frequently enough and you will begin to eliminate the blame game. Usually it doesn?t matter who did what?what is important is what happens next. This question does not have to spoken aloud to promote a change. Get into the habit of mentally asking the question so your brain can generate answers.

2. What can I do to help out?

This question works best when you are working as a part of a team. Rather than observing a co-worker falter under overwhelm, ask what you can do to help rather than if you can help. This question allows the stressed worker to name a task rather than answer an obvious question followed by an explanation. ?Can I help?? often creates more stress if the offer is made by someone unfamiliar with the job. But, if all team members do similar jobs or tasks (e.g. a wait staff or administrative team) ?what can I do to help out?? is the best question. As with most of these questions, this one can be asked tacitly.

3. What can I do to communicate more effectively?

Misunderstandings cost businesses billions of dollars a year in lost productivity, earnings, and lawsuits. Maybe, learning to ask better questions is the correct answer!

4. How can I do my job better?

President, owner, manager, sales person, floor sweeper, coach, teacher, candlestick maker?well, you get the point?everyone can benefit from asking this question.

5. What can I learn today?

Remember when mom asked us this question when we got home from school? What did you learn today, Johnny? If you can?t answer this question check your pulse. Living through an entire day without learning one new thing seems a waste. Get into the habit of asking yourself this question and you?ll begin to pay attention to what there is to learn from every task, situation or person.

6. What have I failed to ask that would be important for me to know?

Sometimes we just don?t know enough to ask the right questions. Use this question only when you want to be smarter or more knowledgeable.

7. What would be important for me to know about you?

This is a great interview question. It is a bit more targeted than, ?Tell me about yourself?? Ask yourself this question and it?s likely you?ll start thinking about values.

8. How can I serve?

This is really a leadership question directed at everyone. Who do you serve and how can you do it best?

9. What can I do to develop myself today?

Self-development isn?t important to everyone but maybe it should be. Know thyself.

10. What can I do to better understand (name someone or something) today?

When conflict arises, when someone drives you crazy, when someone is failing or when we want to make the world a better place to live, this is the question to ask.
