Chicago?s Republic Windows Occupiers Are Building A Workers? Cooperative To Put Production In Workers? Hands- 06/12/12

By Doug Cunningham

The workers who occupied Chicago?s Republic Windows factory in 2008 to win wages and benefits they were entitled to in a plant closing are now trying to launch a workers? cooperative to save their jobs. Serious Energy bought the plant after the first occupation and the workers occupied it again to keep the second bosses from shutting down the machinery when Serious decided to close the plant.. The plant closed May 4th. Armando Robles says the UE Local 1110 workers learned through their struggle how to take over a factory. He hopes this workers? cooperative succeeds and can be used as a national model for workers.

[Armando Robles]: ?If we have good success on this we should duplicate it anywhere where the owners try to close factories or? working areas, bakeries or whatever industries. This is one of the things we would like to see ? we would like to experiment with this. And if we are successful in this we want to be able to support more cooperatives around the United States.?

Robles says the workers? cooperative is being formed to try to organize the work for the benefit of those who actually do the labor, and to preserve jobs.

[Armando Robles 2]: ?And avoid the big salaries for CEO?s and owners and supervisors, engineering and all that. People in reality who have made the work, the labor people, who have the dirty jobs and who could produce the goods are the people on the floor doing the project.?
