The University of Indianapolis bachelor?s degree program in Exercise Science has received five-year accredi-tation from the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, becoming the first such program in Indiana to win that recognition. Among the fastest-growing majors on the UIndy campus, Exercise Science was launched in 2001 with three students but now boasts more than 200. The curriculum prepares graduates for entry-level work in fitness and sports training centers, health care and rehabilitation facilities, and other settings that involve prescribed exercise. It also provides a strong foundation for graduate studies in such fields as medicine, veterinary science, and physical and occupational therapy.
Housed in the Department of Kinesiology and directed by Associate Professor Matthew Beekley, the University of Indianapolis program is strongly rooted in basic science and offers a range of internship opportunities throughout central Indiana. Graduates are eligible to sit for two important professional certifications, the American College of Sports Medicine?s Health/Fitness Specialist certification and the National Strength and Conditioning Association?s Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist certification.
In the School of Nursing, the master?s degree program in Nurse-Midwifery earned a 10-year renewal of its initial accreditation from the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education. The new accreditation came ?without recommendations,? meaning that the review board found no areas needing improvement. Coordinated by Assistant Professor Barbara Winningham, UIndy?s MSN in Nurse-Midwifery remains the only such graduate program in the state. Students must undertake more than 1,000 hours of clinical work to obtain the degree, which is a prerequisite for taking the national certifying exam required to practice midwifery in Indiana.
The UIndy program was No. 29 in the national rankings released last year by U.S. News & World Report.
