Three Reasons Why One Should Use ... - What Is Home Improvement?

There can be no doubt that tablecloths are amongst the most familiar items to us all. We have grown up with them in our homes, and seen them in cafes and restaurants. In fact, they are so familiar, we often completely overlook them and take for granted their place in the home. But they are more important than we might think.

The idea of using cloth over tables is age old, and has developed independently in many areas of the world, from China to Spain and everywhere in between. And because of this, it is actually a very cultural practice, with different eras and regions boasting different styles, from the intricate designs of the Qing dynasty in China to the stereotypically western gingham tablecloths.

Indeed, while the selection of designs has developed over the centuries, reflecting the changing fashion and design trends, the range of materials used has also changed. While square and rectangular silk, linen and cotton are all traditional types, more modern are round plastic tablecloths, which are usually made from pvc. These are completely waterproof, making them a favourite amongst cafes and small local eateries.

Still, exactly why the idea of placing fabric over the surface of a table should have been embraced practically every where is something of a mystery to many. In the modern home, however, there are three principal reasons why a tablecloth should be used.

Provides Protection

Years of using a table will inevitably take its toll. It is not unusual to bump into a table accidently, sometimes knocking it with an object. Other items fall against the table, or their contents spill over the surface. All in all, knocks, abrasions, scratches and dents are all normal aspects of every day wear and tear that will leave a table looking worse off.

However, a tablecloth helps greatly in lessening the ravages of time on furniture. The whether the cloth is cotton or pvc is pretty much down to the owner, but while cotton can certainly reduce impacts, it is not fully protective when substances are dropped onto the table. A pvc tablecloth, however, keeps practically every substance safely away.

Hides Surface Damage

Sometimes the damage to a table is already done, but by placing a cloth over the table surface the damage is effectively hidden from view. So, the ugly scratches that were cut into the table when a heavy item was dragged across it, is no longer in plain view. Nor are the rings that can develop on varnished tables when glasses and mugs holding hot liquids are placed there without any coasters beneath them.

Of course, it is always possible that the table arrived showing such markings. With a second hand table, for example, age will already have had some effect, though distressed wood does tend to add to the charm of the piece. However, if the damage is too severe covering the surface is an effective solution.

Enhances Style

A third reason to place a cloth over the surface of a table has to do with the style and decor of a particular room. Obviously, the kitchen and the dining room are two very different types of rooms, but both are used for dining, and both are commonly styled to the particular tastes of the home owner. Often, the decor follows a particular theme, and with the range of cloths available almost endless, it is a certainty that the right cloth exists for every room decor.

For example, red and white gingham tablecloths may be used to create a Parisian feel in the case of a kitchen table that is surrounded by more traditional, bright decor. In a more contemporary designed living room, a table may be covered with a Hannah Black cloth, for example, with a discreet black floral design set on an off white background.

Kids play rooms, on the other hand, can benefit from tablecloths with images of toys, animals and everyday items. In fact, almost anything can be used as a theme, from crayons and food to fish and shapes. And as such, the cloth can actually provide some educational worth also.

With such an array of styles, designs and shapes, from square oilcloth to round plastic tablecloths, any table can be completely protected while also enhancing the decor of a room.
