ANKARA, Turkey (AP) ? Turkey and Japan expelled Syrian diplomats on Wednesday, joining the U.S. and several other nations in protesting a weekend massacre of more than 100 people in Syria, including women and children.
The move came as Syrian forces bombarded rebel-held areas in the same province where the Houla killings occurred, although no casualties were immediately reported, activists said.
Survivors blamed pro-regime gunmen for at least some of the carnage in Houla as the killings reverberated inside Syria and beyond, further isolating President Bashar Assad and embarrassing his few remaining allies. The Syrian government denied its troops were behind the killings and blamed "armed terrorists."
The U.N.'s top human rights body planned to hold a special session Friday to address the massacre.
Damascus had said it would conclude its own investigation into the Houla deaths by Wednesday but it was not clear if the findings would be made public.
The Houla killings prompted Western nations to expel Syrian diplomats in a coordinated protest, with the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Bulgaria ordering top Syrian diplomats to leave on Tuesday.
Syria's state-run media on Wednesday denounced the diplomatic expulsions, which began Tuesday with announcements by the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Bulgaria, as "unprecedented hysteria."
Turkey, Syria's neighbor and a former close ally, joined the coordinated protest on Wednesday. Turkey has been among the most outspoken critics of the Assad regime. It closed its embassy in Damascus in March and withdrew the ambassador. Its consulate in Aleppo remains open.
The Foreign Ministry said it ordered the Syrian charge d'affaires and other diplomats at the Syrian embassy in Ankara to leave the country within 72 hours. The consulate in Istanbul will remain open for consular duties only.
"It is out of the question to remain silent and without any reaction in the face of this action, which amounts to a crime against humanity," the ministry said in a statement on Wednesday. "This grave crime against humanity by those who have attempted a massacre of civilians cannot go unpunished."
Japan also ordered the Syrian ambassador in Tokyo to leave the country because of concerns about violence against civilians. Japan's foreign minister, Koichiro Genba, said his country was not, however, breaking off diplomatic ties with Syria.
The announcements came a day after the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Bulgaria ordered top Syrian diplomats to leave.
U.N. special envoy Kofi Annan met with Assad on Tuesday in Damascus to try to salvage what was left of his peace plan, which since being brokered six weeks ago has failed to stop any of the violence on the ground.
The Al-Baath daily, the mouthpiece of Assad's Baath Party, said Syria won't be intimidated by such "violent rhythms" and would remain standing in front of such "ugly, bloody and dramatic shows." It added that "Syria will not tremble as they think."
The government's Al-Thawra newspaper also blasted the Western decision, calling it an "escalation that aims to besiege Annan's plan and enflame a civil war."
Tensions have escalated as more information emerges about the May 25 killings in Houla.
The U.N.'s human rights office said most of the 108 victims were shot execution-style at close range, with fewer than 20 people cut down by regime shelling.
U.N. peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous said there are strong suspicions that pro-Assad fighters were responsible for some of the killings, casting doubt on allegations that "third elements" ? or outside forces ? were involved, although he did not rule it out.
On Sunday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi said a committee comprising the ministries of justice, defense and interior was set up to investigate the massacre and would have the job done within three days.
Meanwhile, activists said Syrian troops shelled restive suburbs of Damascus and rebel-held areas in the central city of Homs on Wednesday.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees said at least five people were killed in the Damascus suburb of Douma. Both groups had no details about casualties in Homs, which is the provincial capital of the province that includes Houla.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? As stadiums went quiet around the country the weekend after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, there was plenty of action on the field at historic Memorial Coliseum and little of it had to do with football.
On Sept. 16, 2001, 40 minutes of group sex for a hardcore porn movie was filmed during a four-hour shoot under the lights at the Coliseum, the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday.
The University of Southern California Trojans wouldn't have been on the field anyway that Sunday at the Coliseum, which is run by the city, county and state. But still no officials contacted by the Times knew who gave permission for the shoot.
A spokeswoman for the Coliseum said Wednesday a statement was being prepared.
Stadiums sat empty across the nation as college and professional teams cancelled games in a show of mourning in the aftermath of 9/11. But the period of bereavement apparently was cut short at the Coliseum.
The Coliseum seats, tunnel and entry can be seen in the movie, although the stadium is not identified by name in the 90-minute film.
"I was just in awe that we were at the Coliseum," said one of the film's stars, known as Mr. Marcus.
"I've made movies for about 20 years, and I've done a lot of things, but that one really stands out. ... I mean, who gets to have sex on the Coliseum floor?"
He said the football-themed shoot included some non-explicit scenes in a Coliseum locker room but that footage did not make it into the movie.
No one contacted by the Times acknowledged giving permission for the shoot and the paper was unable to reach the production company, Anabolic Video.
The company's logo is seen on jerseys worn by actors in the film and on banners that are draped like bunting in the stands.
The Coliseum, built as a memorial to World War I veterans, is owned by the state. The national historic landmark has hosted two Summer Olympics. Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass there. And the stadium is where John F. Kennedy accepted the Democratic presidential nomination.
A spokesman for the California attorney general's office told the Times on Tuesday he didn't know if it was illegal to film pornography on state property. Some agencies, including the California Department of Parks and Recreation, ban porn shoots.
Patrick Lynch was general manager of the Coliseum in 2001. He resigned in 2011 and was indicted in March as part of a corruption investigation.
Lynch pleaded guilty to conflict of interest as part of a deal that required him to return nearly $400,000 in alleged kickbacks from a contractor. Former events manager Todd DeStefano pleaded not guilty to charges including bribery, embezzlement and conspiracy. Four other men were also indicted.
But attorney Tony Capozzola called the porn shoot disgusting and said Lynch "would never allow that."
Because of the alleged corruption, the Coliseum Commission voted in May to surrender control of the Coliseum and the Sports Arena to USC.
Two current commissioners, county Supervisors Zev Yaroslavsky and Mark Ridley-Thomas, were on the panel when the movie was shot but neither would talk to the Times.
While they were filming, Mr. Marcus said a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department helicopter flew overhead. The sound of the chopper can be heard in the movie.
He said he expected to be evicted, but no order ever came. "They just circled, like they were trying to see what was going on."
Spokesmen for the department and the Los Angeles Police Department, which has jurisdiction over the Coliseum, told the Times they had no information about a 2001 pornography shoot there.
Mr. Marcus is anything but sorry about his experience.
"You can be mad all you want, but it was one of those once-in-a-lifetime types of opportunities," he said.

(I once lived in a 120 square apartment for a year in Vancouver. If I wasn?t careful, I?d trip over my refrigerator getting out of bed in the morning.)
I didn?t have any consoles growing up for a long time either. Video games had a bad rap for sex and violence even in the 80s, when graphics were so bad that nothing was distinguishable, so Nintendos, Segas and the like were practically banned from my house. Computer games, on the other hand ? those could be educational. I could do enriching things like typing and math!
Not many 11 year olds could type 55 wpm in the early 90s, but those that did, had Mavis?and no NES
However, my parents failed to realize the set-up was already there for other, more interesting diversions and it only became a matter of time until other things found their way onto the computer?

Anche AirFloat rimossa da App Store: Apple stringe sulle API private
Dopo l?eliminazione dallo store di AirFoil, oggi Apple cancella dal proprio catalogo AirFloat, un?app che svolgeva pi? o meno i suoi stessi compiti, permettendo di trasformare il proprio iDevice in un ricevitore di musica in streaming via AirPlay.
Pur continuando a pensare che forse in iOS 6 vedremo una funzionalit? simile, John Gruber su Daring Fireball prova a dare una spiegazione pi? realista e in termini legali: le due app in oggetto utilizzavano API provate per poter ricevere il segnale audio da altri dispositivi, visto che Apple non fornisce alcuna indicazione per implementare tale funzionalit?.
L?accordo che Cupertino sottoscrive con gli sviluppatori prevede che le app che utilizzano API private e, quindi, non ufficialmente documentate, vengano eliminate o non accettate su App Store.
Ricordo, per?, quando Google nel 2007 (quando Android non era ancora nato) rilasci? la sua prima app per la ricerca per iOS, integrando una funzione di vocal search a-l? Siri, che si attivava semplicemente portando il telefono all?orecchio: l?API che permetteva lo sfruttamento del sensore di prossimit? era, all?epoca dei fatti, privata, eppure l?app di Google non fu mai rimossa dallo Store: a volte l?essere un colosso dell?informatica amico di chi decide se un software possa essere installato o no ha i suoi vantaggi.
