Fishing on Trips ? Tips for First Timers

If you enjoy fishing, then you will enjoy spending some time outdoors, on the water with a rod in your hand. What if you are traveling with children or someone that has not had this opportunity yet. A trip is a great way to open the world into new things. You may even find that there are a few helpful ways that you can learn how to improve your ability as well. If you are visiting a location where there are large lakes or the ocean is nearby, make sure you book a few early mornings where you can head out onto the water truly to enjoy the opportunities there.

Making it Enjoyable

When it comes to ensuring you get the best catch plan fishing expeditions and opportunities early on. For example, if you are visiting an area that is popular, be sure to book your reservations in advance. This way, you ensure there is no reason you will miss the big bite. The following tips can help you to make this trip an enjoyable one for anyone who is heading out onto the water for their first outing.

Do not buy or bring your own gear unless you must. Not only is it expensive to take onto a plane, but if you are traveling a long distance, you risk losing it or it breaking. In addition, most areas with charter services will provide you with rental options. These are often ideal for the area, too.

Do rent a charter. Locate one that can provide you with the best possible action. That means doing a bit of research before you even leave for your trip. Be sure that those you are planning to fish with understand that at least one of you is new to the experience. This can help make the trip more enjoyable for everyone involved.

It is also possible to find great locations with educational programs. If you are traveling with children who you want to learn to fish, find one of these programs meant for the youngsters. That way, they can rest easy and really enjoy the experience. They may even become pros before the end of the trip.

Fishing is a fantastic opportunity for those who are traveling. There is nothing quite as relaxing as sitting in a boat, deep in the water, in the peace of dawn waiting for the fish to bite. As you do so, perhaps for the first time, remember to make it worthwhile. To do that, learn from the best so you can visit the best fishing holes in the area. Best of all, do it with those you enjoy being with and you may even start a tradition.

For a great fishing experience, come to Florida. Fishing in Navarre Beach, FL, offers a variety of options: fishing from the Gulf Coast?s longest pier to kayaking. For more information visit: http://www.floridabeachestorivers.com.

Justin Buzzard: Date Your Wife

I want you to do something. Make a list in your head of the marriages you've seen that you actually like. How many married couples can you think of that have a thriving marriage -- a good, happy, alive marriage -- the kind of marriage that makes other people want to get married?

How many marriages did you think of?

I've tried this question on many people. Most people can come up with only one or two examples of strong, lively, and attractive marriages. I want to change that.

Things don't have to stay the way they are.

You know the statistics. Marriage is broken in our world. If your marriage isn't broken, the marriage of someone you know is. At the very least, your marriage isn't pulsating with the life and power it was meant to have.

But, it's not too late. There's still hope for marriage -- for your marriage, for your neighbor's marriage, and for marriages that haven't happened yet. Marriages can be jumpstarted, the sacred union between a husband and a wife can receive new life and power. I don't care who you are, who you've been, or what your marriage has been through -- everything can be made new.

It's harder and easier than you think.

MEN

Men, it starts with you.

You and I and the men we know want something more. Perhaps you've settled for a marriage that looks like most other marriages. Perhaps you now look like most other husbands -- ordinary, nice, confused. But what you really want is a marriage that feels like a mission, a marriage that's moving forward toward something exciting, mysterious, and grand. Kind of like the way dating felt.

Most men don't know how to date their wives. They did it before, but they've forgotten how, or they're trying but it just doesn't seem to be working. Men need to re-learn the all-important skill. All types of marriages -- good ones, mediocre ones, and bad ones -- will experience a jumpstart when a husband figures out how to do something he's long forgotten how to do: date his wife.

THE PROBLEM

Men are idiots. We work hard to date and pursue our girlfriend, but once we marry our girlfriend it all stops. The man who dated, wooed, and passionately pursued his girlfriend degenerates into the husband who merely shares a home, bills, conflict, and problems with his wife.

Think about it. Once upon a time there was a girl you really liked. And you put a lot of effort into impressing that girl. Eventually, that girl became your girlfriend. You told your friends all about her. You were happy. You kept at it. You didn't let anything get in the way of impressing, wooing, and caring for your girlfriend. But then you stopped.

No husband would ever articulate this, but the game plan followed by the average American husband looks something like this:

Step 1: Find a girl you like.
Step 2: Get that girl to like you back.
Step 3: Impress the girl until she becomes your girlfriend and wants to marry you.
Step 4: Relax.
Step 5: Share a home, bills, conflict, kids, and stress with the girl who was your girlfriend.

Clearly this game plan isn't working well. Our marriages need help. Men need help.

DATE YOUR WIFE TONIGHT

Men, how do we begin to change our course? It's simple. It's so simple you can start tonight.

Date your wife.

You dated your girlfriend. Now you just need to start dating your wife. I bet you a hundred bucks that if you follow the following game plan tonight you'll experience the beginnings of something fresh, new, and exciting in your marriage:

Step 1: Call your wife right now and tell her you're taking her out to dinner tonight. Tell her you're making all the arrangements.

Step 2: Make reservations, arrange babysitting if you have kids, and cancel any previous plans you had on the calendar for tonight.

Step 3: Take your wife out to dinner and give her your full attention.

Step 4: Say "sorry." Tell your wife you're sorry for ways you've neglected your marriage or failed to take care of and date her.

Step 5: Have fun.

Follow this plan, and you're off to a great start. The next step is to start dreaming and planning for how you will continue to date your wife for the rest of your life.

Biztree Forms App (for HP Printers)

HP's free Biztree Forms App for HP Web-connected printers is something of a mixed blessing for micro and small offices. The main purpose of the app seems to be to whet your appetite for the full version of Biztree Business in a Box, at $249.95 (direct) minus the $70 savings you get from the coupon you can print as part of the app. In addition to the sales pitch, however, you'll also find a selection of more than 40 useable-as-is business related forms, worksheets, and checklists. The good news is that any given office is bound to find at least a few useful forms in batch, which is enough to make the app worth looking at.

In some ways, the Biztree Forms App is similar to the LegalZoom apps for Lexmark Web-connected printers. Both it and the various LegalZoom apps, including LegalZoom Employment Forms ($29.95 direct, 3 stars) and LegalZoom Business Agreements ($34.95 direct, 2.5 stars), let you print forms from your printer's front panel without needing a computer. There's even some overlap in the forms they offer, with Employment Application forms in both, for example.

There are also three big differences between the Biztree forms app and the LegalZoom apps, however. The first two are fairly obvious: All of the Biztree forms are available through one app, and the app is free. Just as important, where the LegalZoom apps focus on legal forms, the Bizapp forms cover a much wider range, from time sheets, to wire transfers, to customer complaint forms, to a checklist of documents to keep in your employees' personnel files. With the Biztree Forms App, in short, it's much more likely that you'll find forms you can use.

The Basics
According to HP, the Biztree Forms app will work with all current Web-connected laser MFPS as well as Officejet and Officejet Pro ink jet printers, and it should work with all future printers in these categories as well. I tested the App on an HP LaserJet Pro CM1415fnw color MFP ($449 direct, 4 stars). Installation is a non-issue. HP says that if you have a printer that supports the app, you'll find the Biztree Forms icon on your printer's front panel as soon as you set up an account at the HP ePrintCenter.

Using the app is typical of the breed, in general description at least: Pick Biztree Forms from the front panel, find the form you want to print, and print it. The more detailed description includes two extra steps, however. Every time you pick Biztree Forms, you get a short reminder that you can buy the full program. Choose OK, and you move to the main screen, with three choices: Simple Forms, Advanced Forms, and Biztree Coupon.

At the main screen, you need to choose Simple Forms, which translates to Forms you can actually use. The Coupon option prints what amounts to an ad for Business in a Box along with the coupon code for the $70 savings I've already mentioned. The Advanced Forms choice takes you to a hierarchical menu structure with lots of forms. However, they are all either partial or sample forms with an ink-wasting ad, in color, telling you that you can get the full version in editable format as part of Business in a Box.

How Useful is it?
The usable forms are all listed under Simple Forms and are divided into three categories with about 15 choices each. To see a list, you pick Simple Forms and then one of the categories: Forms (Business Credit Application, Credit Card Billing, Purchase Order, and 12 more), Worksheets (Delegation Worksheet, Competitor Analysis Worksheet, and 12 more), and Checklists (21 Things to Do For a Safe Workplace, 19 Strategies for Hiring the Best, and 13 more).

Some of the forms are potentially useful as is. For example, the Electronic Funds Transfer Authorization asks for all the information you need for direct deposit of pay into an employee's account. Others are better understood as templates that you can recreate on your computer. The Time Sheet choice, for example, prints a Weekly Time Record with the hourly pay rate already filled in, and the Depreciation Worksheet has two columns filled with *DIV/0! error messages.

Note too that no matter what kind of business you're in, some percentage of the forms will be largely irrelevant to your needs. In a one person, owner-operated business, for example, there's not much point in filling out a time sheet.

Unfortunately, for many of the forms, the only way to find out whether they're truly useful for your needs is to print them. One feature the app should offer, but doesn't, is an option to print a list of all the forms, preferably with a sentence or two explaining what each is for. Lacking that feature, arguably the smartest thing to do is to print all of the forms yourself. With about 45 forms, this can be a chore, but you only have to do it once, so you can pick the ones you can use, and then keep them all for later reference.

Ultimately, the Biztree Forms Apps usefulness is a little hit and miss, depending entirely on how many of the forms you need. With about 45 to choose from, however, I strongly suspect that most small businesses will find at least a few they can use, even if only as templates for creating their own. Odds are high that if you take the time to look through the choices, you'll find enough here to make it well worth keeping the App available through your printer's front panel.

Abbotsford tennis ace lands scholarship from NCAA's New Mexico Lobos

After years of honing his tennis skills in relative isolation, Riaan du Toit is looking forward to a more collaborative approach when he attends the University of New Mexico this fall.

To accommodate his practice schedule and the frequent travel that his tennis career demands, the 18-year-old Abbotsford resident completed his high school studies by homeschooling through Fraser Valley Distance Education.

When he arrives in Albuquerque in September, du Toit knows he?ll be in for quite a transition in terms of both tennis and school. His schedule will be more regimented on both fronts, and he?ll be working alongside other people to a greater degree in class and with the Lobos tennis team.

But it?s a transition that du Toit is thrilled about.

?Up here, it?s not always easy getting the right training and the right environment (for tennis),? he noted. ?It?s tough with the facilities, and the other players all have their own thing going.

?In university, there?s going to be a set schedule for my tennis, and I?ll know for a fact that I?m playing for this many hours, going to the gym for this many hours, going to a tournament this weekend. I think just because of that, I?ll end up playing a lot more than I have before. I definitely think it?s going to improve my game.?

Du Toit has racked up plenty of frequent flyer miles over the past 12 months, traveling to International Tennis Federation (ITF) junior tournaments around the globe.

Last August, he won both the singles and doubles titles at an ITF event in Burlington, Ont. Then it was off to Florida for the renowned Junior?Orange Bowl and Eddie Herr international tournaments, where his solid performances piqued interest from several NCAA programs ??Penn State, Wake Forest and Tennessee, in addition to New Mexico.

He also traveled to ITF tourneys in Tunisia and South Africa, and made it to the singles final in Tunisia. Along the way, he boosted his ITF junior ranking as high as 251st in the world.

Du Toit settled on New Mexico as his NCAA program of choice after visiting the campus in January.

?They had some Canadians that had gone there previously, and it?s such a friendly environment,? he explained. ?It was definitely a welcoming experience.?

Riaan comes by his talent honestly. His father Andre is a tennis coach who used to run an academy in his native South Africa, and older siblings Charles and Trudie had highly decorated junior careers.

Trudie also earned an NCAA scholarship ??she recently completed her senior year at the University of Oregon.

?She just enjoyed it so much, and she said I won?t have any trouble transitioning,? Riaan said. ?I think I?ll fit right in. Socially, it?ll be a great experience.?

Du Toit?s goal is to play pro tennis one day, and if all goes well, he?d love to embark on that journey after two or three years at New Mexico.

He models his game after Novak Djokovic, the five-time Grand Slam champ from Serbia who is currently ranked No. 1 in the world.

?He?s got an attitude, but I try to look past that,? du Toit said with a chuckle. ?I just like his game. He?s kind of in between (Roger) Federer and (Rafael) Nadal ??between the power and the spin. I think that?s the perfect medium. What more could you want??

Pest treatment should not be considered as an optional home improvement service; rather it should be taken as a serious compulsory work. If you are located at Canberra, getting the help of the Pest Control Canberra service provider regularly at least once in two months can ensure maximum protection to your home against any form of bugs. With regular activities, you will not only prevent dreaded pest creeping around your home, but will also ensure a health and clean home.

When a professional service provider is invited regularly, he can clearly identify the structural damage that can be caused by the pests well in advance in such a way that your building can be protected. Even though, most of the pests do not cause structural damage to the building, some of them can create problems in the electrical wiring of the home and some might cause some diseases to the incumbents of your home. Here are the reasons for considering the help of a pest control service provider regularly:

Early detection of problems created by pests: Most of the rodents and bugs reproduce rapidly once they have found a suitable place in your home thereby causing a snowball effect in the home. When seeking the help of a professional pest control firm, the firm will be sending a professional who can stop the pest infestations from growing and in addition to solving the existing pest problem; they can also identify the potential pest problems and can wade off the pests even before they enter into your home.

Prevention of fire accidents: Some of the gnawing mammals like hamsters, squirrels and rats, otherwise called as Rodents chew items for preventing their teeth from growing. If these rodents do not chew something, their teeth will grow to a length that would prevent them from eating. Therefore, these living organisms always look for some materials to chew and so there are chances that they damage the electrical settings in the home thereby exposing the home to electrical shocks resulting in fire accidents. Only a professional Pest Control Canberra service provider can protect your home and other property from rodents with the help of some techniques and they can also prevent the entry of rodents by using some equipment like door closes, steel wool, aluminum sheeting, bird wire, etc...

These professional firms can also offer other services like prevention of diseases and they can eliminate the risk of structural damage to the home caused by some types of pests.

Effective pest control services are available in the market that not only control the growth of pests but also eliminates their infestation to the core. Oil Stock Outlook

I was fifty-feet above the deck, swinging back and forth like a metronome on a bungee cord, when Dad asked me about oil stocks.

You see, about a week ago my parents ? who are in their mid-seventies ? were sailing in fair conditions when the loop adjoining their jib sail to their jib halyard snapped.

The jib (the big sail on the front of the boat) came fluttering down while the bitter end of the halyard was stuck at the top of the mast.

This meant, of course, that on a perfectly fine Saturday morning when an intelligent person might be eating pancakes and drinking coffee on the patio, yours truly was dangling like a howler monkey in a bosun's chair, pondering terminal velocity and whether or not a shroud could take off a limb.

Now, I?m not saying that my father is senile, but in recent years he has been known to have his senior moments.

Sometimes he forgets things or scares pedestrians.?

These incidents are not serious?? unless you are betting your life on a man?s rope-handling skills...

So, as I twisted around, bounced off the crosstrees and looked down at a seagull, I pondered oil stocks.

Oil Falls Hard

Oil stocks have fallen more than any other market segment this year.

According to Bloomberg:

The MSCI World Energy Index (MXWO) has declined 9.6 percent this year, more than any other group. The divergence reflects the transformation of an industry where growing consumption of energy has been met with even bigger gains in supply. U.S. crude inventories are the highest since 1990 and natural gas prices have lost 38 percent in 12 months amid a glut spurred by hydraulic fracturing.

When to Sell

I?ve been trading oil for about 15 years now. I love the oil trade because it has a long cycle. You buy when it?s going up and sell when it?s dropping.

It takes a lot of time and money to get those rigs and deals in place... once they are, they stay for a couple of years.

I sold all of my oil plays three months ago for two basic reasons: a global economic slowdown and increased oil inventory.?

Europe is in real trouble. The BRIC countries are slowing fast with big currency hits.

On top of this, the Saudis are pumping at a high rate while the U.S. government is estimating shale formations such as the Bakken in North Dakota will more than double oil output in the next two decades.

crude junIf you look at the one-year chart, you can see that oil rallied from September to February based on the idea that the U.S. had turned the corner on the economy.

Once the bulls turned to bears, the price of oil dropped fast.?

That said, we are approaching a support line at $75 for WTI. There is a very good chance we?ll get a dead cat bounce.

One reason might be an active hurricane season. There have been some evacuations from rigs in the Gulf of Mexico due to tropical storm Debby. Gulf hurricanes pushed up the oil price in 2005?? the year of Katrina.

But what my father wanted to know when I landed back on deck was whether oil companies like ExxonMobil (XOM) were now a buy as a value play.?

Of course not, I told him.

Stay on top of the hottest investment ideas before they hit Wall Street. Sign up for the Wealth Daily newsletter below. You'll also get our free report, The Road to $200 Silver.

The problem is oil companies that had expected to grow earnings 2.2% in 2012 are now expecting earnings to fall 5.8% this year.

Never buy into a contracting market; you buy when the investors have given up and the growth comes back.

When the underlying market expands and no one is paying attention is the time to buy the stock at a discount.

Most newsletters will only tell you when to buy a stock, but with today?s ever volatile market, it?s just as important to know when to sell.

This is far from a comprehensive list, but it works:

Christian DeHaemer?s 10 Reasons to Sell

  1. Even if you are up a lot, selling half of a 100% winner gets your principle back?? and lets you ride the market for free. No one went broke taking profits...
  2. A company or industry goes from growth to contraction ? or misses earnings. Always sell a miss!
  3. A major management leader quits/gets fired. Smart leaders always flee before the implosion (see: GE?s Jack Welch or Enron?s Kenneth Lay).
  4. A company gets bought out. There is no need to wait for the merger to go through for that extra 5%. There's a risk that the deal won?t happen and the stock will drop.
  5. The company cuts its dividend.
  6. The company has a new business plan.
  7. The stock chart breaks below the long-term support line.
  8. The stock chart goes parabolic (this is what happened to the oil stocks three months ago).
  9. A major lawsuit.
  10. You hit your stop-loss.

Avoid the big oil companies unless you are trading the short-term bounce.

Buy companies that save consumers money or benefit from lower oil prices ? companies like airlines, utilities, and miners.

Keep your feet on the ground,

Gartner Says India Printer Copier and Multifunctional Product Market Grew 3.9 Percent in the First Quarter Of 2012

Mumbai, India,
June?27,
2012?

The combined serial inkjet and page printer, copier and multifunction product (MFP) market in India totaled 6,95,128 units in the first quarter of 2012, a 3.9 percent increase compared to the first quarter of 2011, according to Gartner, Inc.

?The first quarter was a mixed bag for most of the print providers in the Indian market. The imaging industry saw a slight push by the government and the home segment despite the glum economic scenario prevailing overall in the IT sector,? said Amrita Choudhury, research analyst at Gartner.

HP remained the leader in the India printer, copier and MFP market (see Table 1), as its market share totaled 58.7 percent in the first quarter of 2012, followed by Canon with 12.7 percent market share, Epson at 9.7 percent, and Samsung with 8.8 percent market share.

The A4 MFP segment is expected to remain the growth engine in the print market as the price gap between MFP?s and printers continues to narrow amid a broader range of MFP products and a continued sales focus. This segment showed a healthy growth of 16.8 percent in comparison to the first quarter of 2011. HP maintained its leadership position at 59.2 percent market share, followed by Canon with 13.3 percent, Samsung with 10 percent and Epson with 8.7 percent market share in the first quarter of 2011.

In first quarter of 2012, A3 flatbed copier MFP segment also fuelled up a strong growth of 27 percent compared to the first quarter of 2011. Ricoh led the market with 25.3 percent market share, followed by Canon with 19.7 percent, Konica Minolta with 13.9 percent, and Kyocera Mita with 12.3 percent market share compared to the first quarter of 2011. ?

The page printer market declined 13.5 percent in the first quarter of 2012. HP dominated the market with 68.8 percent market share. Canon saw a major shipment decline of 67.5 percent compared to first quarter of 2011, and its market share also contracted significantly from 36 percent in the first quarter in 2011 to 13.5 percent in the first quarter 0f 2012. Samsung recorded a growth of 2.6 percent, and it accounted for 12.6 percent market share in the Indian page printer market.

The inkjet printers market declined 3.3 percent compared to the first quarter of 2011.The advancement of electronic media, such as smartphones and tablets, as a means of communication also contributed to the decline. How Payday Loans Can Affect Your Credit Score | - Your Finance Tips

Payday loans provide financial assistance to borrowers that have nowhere else to turn for help. However, when using payday loans, many people fear how their credit score will be affected. That is why it is important to become familiar with the 3 ways payday loans can affect your credit score.

What Is a Credit Score?

Your credit score is determined by the information in your credit report, and this allows lenders to determine whether or not to give you a loan and how much interest can be charged. Your credit report contains information on how your bills are paid, where you live and work, and if you have filed for bankruptcy or been sued or arrested. The credit report also includes loans that have already been paid off, bill payments that have been missed, and if you currently have any debt.

Your credit rating can be anywhere between 300 to 850. If you have a credit rating in the 700s or higher, you will have a better chance of being approved for loans or purchases, such as insurance. Higher credit scores can also increase your eligibility for larger loan amounts.

What Are the 3 Ways Payday Loans Can Affect Your Credit Score?

1. Positively.

When used responsibly, payday advance loans can potentially improve your credit rating. This is possible because some lenders reward responsible customers that pay on time by reporting it to the three major national credit bureaus, TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian. However, payday advance loans can also help indirectly by allowing borrowers to take care of overdue bills quickly to prevent further damage to an existing score.

2. Negatively.

If people use payday advance loans irresponsibly, it can negatively affect their credit. This is because lenders will report your delinquency to a collections agency to begin the process of collecting what is owed. By doing this, the three major credit bureaus will also become aware of the outstanding debt and your credit rating will be negatively affected. That is why it is very important to determine if you can absolutely pay back what you owe on time before taking out a loan.

To avoid negatively affecting your credit, consider the following:

? Only take out the smallest amount you need to cover your expense
? Be aware of the interest rates and fees attached to your loan
? Be aware of how long you have to repay your loan
? Pay your loan back on time

3. Not at all.

In most cases, as long as you pay the loan back on time, your credit will not be affected by payday advance loans since the lender may not make any reports at all. Since many lenders do not require credit checks, your loan may not even appear on your credit report.

As you can see, it is very important that you determine if payday loans are right for you by becoming familiar with the 3 ways payday loans can affect your credit score. As long as you can manage your loan in a responsible manner, you can find the financial relief you need while still maintaining your credit rating.

Draytek Vigor 2920n Dual-WAN Security Router

The Draytek Vigor 2920n Dual-WAN Security Router ($250) is more than a router?it's more of a comprehensive networking appliance. Actually, as a single-band 802.11n router, it's rather average, with so-so throughput and range. Yet for small businesses looking for features not typically found in routers?such as dual WAN ports for failover and load-balancing, robust VPN deployment, and other business-class features?the Vigor 2920n delivers.

Specs
The Draytek Vigor 2920n Dual-WAN Security Router is a rather large router and is rack-mountable (through purchase of an optional mount kit). Since the device is designed to be deployed in server racks and rooms, the WAN and LAN ports are on the front panel.

There are four Gigabit Ethernet ports and, as mentioned, two Gigabit WAN ports. The router also has one USB port for external drive and printer sharing, as well as 10 LEDs that display not only activity of the WAN ports but Denial-of-Service activity, QoS, VPN, and CSM (Content Security Management) activity. Some organizations may find it handy to tell at a glance if services like VPN are enabled and running OK; the Vigor2920n displays as a solid green light when they are.

The router ships with three attachable antennas, but, based on my range testing of the default configuration, I would upgrade to high-gain antennas for larger coverage areas.
The Vigor 2920n runs quiet and cool, even after a few days of uptime, and it's sturdy enough to have all ports connected with cables the device remain in place on a surface.

Setup and Features
There's a lot happening with this router. It's highly-configurable with a firewall, URL, and Web content filtering, WDS (Wireless Distribution System) support, supports for VLANs and more advanced capabilities such as port mirroring.

A native VPN server supports up to 32 simultaneous VPN tunnels (IPSec, PPTP and L2TP). The device also supports 3G/LTE cellular modems and WiMAX.

The Vigor 2920n's sophisticated diagnostics include a Smart Monitor traffic analyzer. The router also has security provisions against DoS attacks and other threats.

Set up involved connecting the router to a WAN connection and using a computer with DHCP enabled to access the Web-based management interface. I had to manually configure the WAN settings for the router to pick up Internet access.

The Vigor 2920n's interface, while meaty and filled with screens and features, timed out on me several times while I was working in it. I also found configuring content filtering somewhat tedious, although it's very detailed and based on setting up individual "object profiles." For instance, if you want to block certain keywords or URLs, you have to set individual profiles for those objects and then configure filtering. Some configuration options, such as content filtering, seem to be unnecessarily complicated to set up in the interface.

Performance
Throughput performance for Draytek's router in Mixed mode was average, and surprisingly, in 802.11n mode, slightly below average. I did find, however, that the Vigor 2920n sustained throughput relatively well at greater distances from the router. Here is throughput at both Mixed and 802.11-n only modes, compared to other single-band routers:

Good Network Appliance, OK Router
Draytek's Vigor 2920n is a high-end networking device designed for businesses looking for a router that can do business-centric tasks. If your business needs require VPN, very customizable content-filtering, traffic analysis and other specific networking needs, the Vigor 2920n is a good choice. However, average throughput makes it best for SMBs with low throughput demands and warrants the device a solid three stars; more for the impressive features than performance. For a router that delivers high throughput and has some business capabilities, Netgear?s N750 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router (WNDR4000) is an Editors? Choice that offers excellent speed at 5GHz.

(AP) ? In a momentous ruling touching virtually every American, the Supreme Court narrowly upheld President Barack Obama's historic health care overhaul Thursday with the unlikely help of conservative Chief Justice John Roberts.

But the decision also gave Republicans unexpected ammunition to energize supporters in the battle for the White House and to fight "Obamacare" as a new tax on people who don't obtain health insurance.

Roberts' vote, along with those of the court's four liberal justices, preserved the largest expansion of the nation's social safety net in more than 45 years, including the hotly debated core requirement that nearly everyone have health insurance or pay a penalty. The aim is to extend coverage to more than 30 million people who now are uninsured

The 5-4 decision meant the huge overhaul, still taking effect, could proceed and pick up momentum over the next several years, with an impact on the way that countless Americans receive and pay for their personal medical care.

The ruling handed Obama a campaign-season victory in rejecting arguments that Congress went too far in approving the plan. However, Republicans quickly indicated they would try to use the decision against him.

At the White House, Obama declared, "Whatever the politics, today's decision was a victory for people all over this country." Blocks away, GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney renewed his criticism of the overhaul, calling it "bad law" and promising to work to repeal it if elected in November.

Demonstrators for and against the law crowded the grounds outside the Supreme Court Building on Capitol Hill as Roberts, sitting at the center of the nine black-robed justices inside, announced the decision to a packed courtroom.

Breaking with the other conservative justices, Roberts read the judgment that allows the law to go forward. He explained at length the court's view of the insurance mandate as a valid exercise of Congress' authority to "lay and collect taxes." The administration estimates that roughly 4 million people will pay the penalty rather than buy insurance.

Congress called the payment a penalty, not a tax, but Roberts said the court would not get hung up on labels. Among other indications it is a tax, Roberts said, "the payment is collected solely by the IRS through the normal means of taxation."

"Because the Constitution permits such a tax, it is not our role to forbid it, or to pass upon its wisdom or fairness," Roberts said.

Many Republicans oppose the law, arguing that it marks a government takeover of health care at the same time it curtails Medicare spending and raises taxes. They also point to studies that predict private employers will be forced to reduce or eliminate coverage and that the legislation will wind up costing far more than estimated, raising federal deficits as a result.

Stocks of hospital companies rose and some insurance companies fell after the ruling.

The decision should help hospitals by adding millions of people to the rolls of the insured, expanding the pool of health care consumers. But by the same reasoning, insurance companies will also gain millions of premium-paying customers.

The court found problems with the law's expansion of Medicaid, but even there it said the expansion could proceed as long as the federal government does not threaten to withhold states' entire Medicaid allotment if they don't take part.

Justices Stephen Breyer, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor joined Roberts in the outcome.

Justices Samuel Alito, Anthony Kennedy, Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas dissented.

Kennedy summarized the dissent in the courtroom. "In our view, the act before us is invalid in its entirety," he said.

The dissenters said in a joint statement that the law "exceeds federal power both in mandating the purchase of health insurance and in denying non-consenting states all Medicaid funding."

The justices rejected two of the administration's three arguments in support of the insurance requirement. Roberts agreed with his conservative colleagues that Congress lacks the power under the Constitution's commerce clause to put the mandate in place.

"The federal government does not have the power to order people to buy health insurance," he said in a part of his opinion that the liberal justices did not join. But his crucial bottom line was: "The federal government does have the power to impose a tax on those without health insurance."

In all, the justices spelled out their views in six opinions totaling 187 pages. Roberts, Kennedy and Ginsburg spent 51 minutes summarizing their views in the courtroom.

The legislation passed Congress in early 2010 after a monumental struggle in which all Republicans voted against it. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., said Thursday the House will vote July 11 on whether to repeal the law, though such efforts have virtually no chance in the Democratic-controlled Senate.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said the health care law makes it harder for small businesses to hire workers. "Today's ruling underscores the urgency of repealing this harmful law in its entirety," he said.

But Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., heaped praise on the court's decision, and the 2010 law, in a Senate speech. "Passing the Affordable Care Act was the greatest single step in generations toward ensuring access to affordable, quality health care for every American, regardless of where they live or how much money they make," he said.

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi cast the decision as vindication for her work to secure passage of the far-reaching legislation.

"This decision is a victory for the American people. With this ruling, Americans will benefit from critical patient protections, lower costs for the middle class, more coverage for families, and greater accountability for the insurance industry," Pelosi said.

After the ruling, Republican campaign strategists said Romney will use it to continue campaigning against "Obamacare" ? the name the GOP gave the plan In derision, though many Democrats now accept it ? and in attacking the president's signature health care program as a tax increase.

"Obama might have his law, but the GOP has a cause," said veteran campaign adviser Terry Holt. "This promises to galvanize Republican support around a repeal of what could well be called the largest tax increase in American history."

Democrats said Romney, who backed an individual health insurance mandate when he was Massachusetts governor, will have a hard time exploiting the ruling.

"Mitt Romney is the intellectual godfather of Obamacare," said Democratic consultant Jim Manley. "The bigger issue is the rising cost of health care, and this bill is designed to deal with it."

Ginsburg, an appointee of Democratic President Bill Clinton, said in her opinion that "Congress followed Massachusetts' lead."

More than eight in 10 Americans already have health insurance. But for most of the 50 million who are uninsured, the ruling offers the promise of guaranteed coverage at affordable prices. Lower-income and many middle-class families will be eligible for subsidies to help pay premiums starting in 2014.

There's also an added safety net for all Americans, insured and uninsured. Starting in 2014, insurance companies will not be able to deny coverage for medical treatment, nor can they charge more to people with health problems. Those protections, now standard in most big employer plans, will be available to all, including people who get laid off, or leave a corporate job to launch their own small business.

Seniors also benefit from the law through better Medicare coverage for those with high prescription costs, and no copayments for preventive care. But hospitals, nursing homes, and many other service providers may struggle once the Medicare cuts used to finance the law really start to bite.

Illegal immigrants are not entitled to the new insurance coverage under the law, and will remain one of the biggest groups uninsured.

Obama's law is by no means the last word on health care. Experts expect costs to keep rising, meaning that lawmakers will have to revisit the issue perhaps as early as next year, when federal budget woes will force them to confront painful options for Medicare and Medicaid, the giant federal programs that cover seniors, the disabled, and low-income people.

The health care overhaul focus will now quickly shift from Washington to state capitals. Only 14 states, plus Washington, D.C., have adopted plans to set up the new health insurance markets called for under the law. Called exchanges, the new markets are supposed to be up and running on Jan. 1, 2014. People buying coverage individually, as well as small businesses, will be able to shop for private coverage from a range of competing insurers.

Most Republican-led states, including large ones such as Texas and Florida, have been counting on the law to be overturned and have failed to do the considerable spade work needed to set up exchanges. There's a real question about whether they can meet the deadline, and if they don't, Washington will step in and run their exchanges for them.

In contrast to the states, health insurance companies, major employers, and big hospital systems are among the best prepared. Many of the changes called for in the law were already being demanded by employers trying to get better value for their private health insurance dollars.

"The main driver here is financial," said Dr. Toby Cosgrove, CEO of the Cleveland Clinic, which has pioneered some of the changes. "The factors driving health care reform are not new, and they are not going to go away."

The Medicaid expansion would cover an estimated 17 million people who earn too much to qualify for assistance but not enough to afford insurance. The federal and state governments share the cost, and Washington regularly imposes conditions on the states in exchange for money.

Roberts said Congress' ability to impose those conditions has its limits. "In this case, the financial 'inducement' Congress has chosen is much more than 'relatively mild encouragement' ? it is a gun to the head," he said.

The law says the Health and Human Services Department can withhold a state's entire Medicaid allotment if the state doesn't comply with the health care law's Medicaid provisions.

Even while ruling out that level of coercion, however, Roberts said nothing prevents the federal government from offering money to accomplish the expansion and withholding that money from states that don't meet certain conditions.

"What Congress is not free to do is to penalize states that choose not to participate in that new program by taking away their existing Medicaid funding," he said.

Ginsburg said the court should have upheld the entire law as written without forcing any changes in the Medicaid provision. She said Congress' constitutional authority to regulate interstate commerce supports the individual mandate. She warned that the legal reasoning, even though the law was upheld, could cause trouble in future cases.

"So in the end, the Affordable Health Care Act survives largely unscathed. But the court's commerce clause and spending clause jurisprudence has been set awry. My expectation is that the setbacks will be temporary blips, not permanent obstructions," Ginsburg said in a statement she, too, read from the bench.

In the courtroom Thursday were retired Justice John Paul Stevens and the wives of Roberts, Alito, Breyer, Kennedy and Thomas.

(AP) ? Hundreds of African-American veterans who helped to integrate the Marine Corps during World War II at a time segregation was an everyday reality are now proud recipients of the nation's highest civilian honor.

Nearly 70 years after the Marines of Montford Point became the first African Americans in the Corps, Congress on Wednesday awarded them the Congressional Gold Medal. The Corps was the last branch of the U.S. military to allow blacks to serve.

Originally from Washington, D.C., then-19-year-old Charles Manuel Jr. enrolled with the Marines in 1942 straight out of high school.

Manuel was sent to Montford Point, a North Carolina base that the Corps created to keep African Americans away from bases where other Marines trained. Roughly 20,000 other African- American Marines trained at the base, which operated from 1942 to 1949.

He said that the training at the base was rough, because for many recruits it was their first time experiencing boot training and their instructors were White. "Our drill instructor told us, 'You people want to be Marines, I'm going to make Marines out of you dead or alive.'"

Manuel, now in his late 80's, sat next to his daughter, Rosetta Holloway at the ceremony.

"It was more than overdue," Holloway said. "I'm very excited and pleased for my father, who's really proud of being in the Marines."

William McDowell, who was selected to represent Montford Point, received the medal on behalf of the roughly 400 Montford Point Marines in attendance. "It does sadden me that some of our brothers are not with us today. The upside of it all is that we do remember each and every one of them. They are in our hearts and minds and they should never be forgotten," McDowell said before taking a pause to dry his eyes.

The medal will be on display at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Virginia. The Marines received bronze replicas.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt banned racially based employment discrimination by all federal agencies in 1941, and a presidential directive allowed African Americans to serve the Marines in 1942.

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi told the Marines: "You served our country at a time that it took an extra dose of patriotism to do so. Because all of the freedoms that you were fighting for were not afforded to everyone in our country at that time."

Speaker of the House John Boehner, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell also spoke.

"Allowing blacks to serve the Marine Corps was seen as an experiment," Boehner told the crowd. "If it was an experiment, it didn't last any long. Before the end of the war, the Marine commandant at the time said the experiment was over. The men trained at Montford were Marines, period."

'Draw Something' animates John Mayer video

By Randee Dawn

Millions have used "Draw Something" to play a game, but design studio head Jimmy Thompson had a different idea -- he would turn a series of "Draw" sketches into an animated video for?John Mayer's "Queen of California." And Mayer approves.

"A must-see. So great," said the musician, posting on his Tumblr blog.?

The video features some simple and some intricate drawings that help illustrate the song, and it's visually addicting.?

"There is something really charming about the medium -- the strokes -- and I love the anticipation when you watch someone?s drawing being revealed," Thompson, founder of Brainbowinc, told Mashable. "I thought ("Draw Something" would)?be a good match for a song with a lot of nouns."

As Mashable noted, Brainbowinc has worked with Mayer's label Columbia Records before, but they weren't involved in his creating the video. Nor is Mayer the first artist to get the "Draw Something" treatment -- singer/songwriter Isaac Simons asked fans to contribute artwork from the game for his "Call to Arms" video in March. ?

Nexus Q hacked to run Android games in under 24 hours

The word "run" in the headline is chosen very carefully. Developer Christina Kelly managed to get Swords and Soldiers up and running on the Nexus Q, but the game is not actually playable. Without a touchscreen or any other way to actually control the title, there's not much to do besides look at the splash screen. Still, the fact that in under 24 hours Google's new streaming appliance has already made to fire up unapproved apps bodes well for its future with the hacker community. Once the device gets in the hands of more devs we imagine it'll only a matter of time before someone figures out a way to get Hulu or Netflix running on it, with your Android phone acting as the remote.

Researchers delve into airborne particulates

ScienceDaily (June 27, 2012) ? For the first time, Lawrence Livermore researchers and international collaborators have peered into the makeup of complex airborne particulate matter so small that it can be transported into human lungs -- usually without a trace.

The structure of micron-size particulate matter is important in a wide range of fields from toxicology to climate science (tobacco smoke and oil smoke particles are typically one micron in size).

However, its properties are surprisingly difficult to measure in their native environment: electron microscopy requires the collection of particles on a substrate, visible light scattering provides insufficient resolution, and X-ray studies have, to date, been limited to a collection of particles.

But new research, using intense coherent X-ray pulses from the Linac Coherent Light Source free-electron laser at Stanford, demonstrates a new in situ fractal method for imaging individual sub-micron particles to nanometer resolution in their native environment. The research appears in the June 28 issue of the journal, Nature.

Complex airborne particulate matter (PM) with a diameter less than 2.5 microns can efficiently transport into the human lungs and constitutes the second most important contribution to global warming. Amongst this PM, the structure and composition of carbonaceous soot has been extensively studied:

Pulsed X-ray beams were shot into a jet of aerosolized particles. Since the beam is so small and the particulate matter density is so large, only single particles were hit. The beams were so intense that diffraction from individual particles could be measured for structural analysis. Mass spectrometry on the ejected ion fragments was used to simultaneously probe the composition of single aerosol particles.

"Our results show the extent of internal symmetry of individual soot particles and the surprisingly large variations in their fractal dimensions," said Stefan Hau-Riege, one of the three Lawrence Livermore authors of the paper. "More broadly, our methods can be extended to resolve both static and dynamic structures of general ensembles of disordered particles."

Having a grasp on the general structure has wide implications ranging from solvent accessibilities in proteins, vibrational energy transfer via the hydrodynamic interaction of amino acids, and large-scale production of nanoscale structures via flame synthesis.

A Common Strangeness: Contemporary Poetry, Cross-Cultural ...

My book A Common Strangeness: Contemporary Poetry, Cross-Cultural Encounter, Comparative Literature has just been released by Fordham University Press. Extracts from the book can be read on Google Books here. The book is available for purchase here. For further details, see my blog:
http://commonstrangeness.wordpress.com.

"A Common Strangeness is unique among studies of contemporary poetics in being genuinely global in its perspective and its reach. At home in Russian and Chinese as well as American poetry and that of his native New Zealand, Jacob Edmond pinpoints the crucial relationships that exist between what are seemingly disparate poetic cultures. The Chinese poet Yang Lian, who lived in exile in Auckland, is read under the sign of Benjamin and Baudelaire. The American Language poet Lyn Hejinian's important dialogue with the Russian avant-gardist Arkadii Dragomoshchenko is studied carefully, and Bei Dao, Dmitri Prigov, and Charles Bernstein are treated as representative figures of cross-cultural thinking in the age of globalism. Edmond's is a provocative, exciting, and genuinely original study of the new poetics; we will all be learning from it!"??Marjorie Perloff

"This bold triangulation of six Chinese, Russian, and American poets advances lively current debates about global literature by exploring encounters that challenge the old binarisms and chart possibilities of literary singularities for a future poetics. Edmond's shrewd account of literary crossings in post-Cold War history helps us imagine how we can experience the challenge of new literary configurations."??Jonathan Culler

"Jacob Edmond addresses what he calls 'forms of textual strangeness' across contemporary poems of beautiful complexity and staying power. This theoretically astute book challenges us to read with a keener eye and to recognize how much poetry can tell us about political catastrophes, national dislocations, and promises of cultural renewal."?Stephanie Sandler

Benefits of Eating at Home | Budget Earth

Benefits of Eating at Home

?I don?t like to eat out very much.? While sometimes it can be a fun treat, there?s a certain comfort I find in making my own meals and cooking for others.? Aside from personal enjoyment, there are also a variety of other benefits to eating meals at home.

?Perhaps some of the most obvious advantages to eating at home are knowing exactly what is in your meal (including ingredients as well as nutrition) and saving money.? Restaurant expenses can add up quickly, even if you are only buying from the dollar menu at your favorite fast food place.? While it may seem like a bargain to buy a hamburger or a side of fries for only $1, think about how many servings you are actually getting from that purchase.? While you may consider, say, a side of fries for this cost a good deal, consider the price of a bag of potatoes, by comparison, which usually ranges somewhere from $1.50 to $3.? Of course, depending on the type of potato it may be a little more, just as the size of the potatoes in the bag will vary (again, depending on the type anywhere from perhaps 8 to 20).?? Even if there are only 8 potatoes in a bag costing $3, that works out to about $0.38 per serving, as opposed to the $1 serving from the fast food restaurant.? Still seem like a bargain?

By cooking and eating at home, you also know how fresh the foods you?re eating are as well as what goes into your family dishes.? Restaurant meals often include an exorbitant amount of salt or fat that is unnecessary, and some research has addressed that eating out can increase one?s daily caloric intake, especially calories from fat and added sugar.? While you can special order something to a degree, there are often hidden culprits that you are simply unaware of.? For example, who thinks to hold the butter on their burger bun?? Portion control is also easier when prepping meals at home; you don?t have to remember to box up half your meal, ask for a to-go container, or resist the allure of an all-you-can eat buffet or the dessert menu if you?re already feeling stuffed.

People may argue that you can spend quality time together as a family when eating out, but there?s no denying that preparing your meals at home can additionally help bring everyone together in order to help prepare the meal.? Children generally love to help out in any way they can, whether that means pouring ingredients into a mixing bowl, stirring something, or even just setting the table.? I remember that, as a child, my parents assigned each of my siblings and I some sort of task to complete before dinnertime.? Someone would take and fulfill drink orders, someone would set out the plates and bowls, another the silverware, and someone the napkins.? Of course, someone would also say a blessing, and then we would all sing ?The Lord is Good to Me.?? Working together in the kitchen can be a great way to teach kids important lessons about healthy eating, and also to let them express their creativity.? It?s amazing what a confidence boost or feeling of accomplishment someone can receive from saying ?I helped make that.?? Then, eating dinner as a family allows children to model the choices you make in nutritious eating.? Kids tend to mimic the attitudes their parents hold toward food, so if they see you are excited about healthy eating they are more likely to perceive it as something important.? In addition, I would add that eating at home allows you to create and share cultural traditions, such as the family dinner song that mine still sings to this day.

You may not believe it, but cooking meals at home can also be a time-saver.? I?m not saying that taking an hour or two out of every day during the week is the answer, but have you considered preparing a week?s worth of meals perhaps one day out of the week?? One pot meals or even crock pot recipes have become increasingly popular over the years.? If you don?t have a slow cooker, you can simply double one of your favorite recipes (soups or casseroles are often great for this), enjoy part of the meal one day, and freeze the rest for a time when you?re too tired to cook.? Cooking and dining at home can certainly be a rewarding experience in more ways than one.
