Disagreements over the vision and style of Apple forced Jobs out in 1985. After resigning from the company he founded, Jobs went on to start NeXT, a company that aimed to bring his vision of personal computing and programming to educators, engineers and designers.

NeXT wasn't the success that Jobs hoped that it would be. It didn't fulfill on its promise to change the computing industry -- at least, not at first. Objective-C, the programming language that is still used in Mac OS X and in iOS, was developed at NeXT.

It's easy to think NeXT's track record was unsuccessful. But the technology products that have made Apple not just a successful company, but the most valuable company in the world, are direct descendants of work done at NeXT. iOS simply wouldn't be iOS without the work that Jobs fostered at his second company.

And by buying NeXT, as Apple did in 1997, it was buying back Steve Jobs himself -- who soon ousted the hapless Gil Amelio as CEO.

Pixar and the Future of Animation

Of course, Jobs' business legacy is about more than just Apple. In 1986, Jobs acquired a small animation studio called Pixar. It would be Pixar, not Apple, that would bring Jobs major success in the 1990s.

After years of toiling away in obscurity, Pixar hit the big time in 1995 with Toy Story, the first completely computer animated full-length motion picture. In 2006, Jobs sold Pixar to the Walt Disney Company for more than $7 billion. Jobs became a member of Disney's Board of Directors -- and the company's largest shareholder.

While the success of Pixar should be largely attributed to director John Lasseter, the decision to acquire the company and invest in its technology in 1986 is a great example of Jobs' vision and understanding of the future.

A Second and Third Act of Success

Since returning to Apple in 1997, Jobs has lead his company through the most phenomenal turn-around story in business history. Since taking over as CEO in 1997 -- initially, he said, for an interim period -- Apple's stock has increased nearly a hundredfold.

1998's introduction of the iMac and the 2001 introduction of the iPod led many to call Apple's early 2000s renaissance the "most successful second act in business history." But it has been in the last four years -- since the introduction of the iPhone -- that Apple has utterly dominated. Earlier this month, Apple overtook Exxon as the most valuable company.

It's not just marketing rhetoric to say that the iPhone, and now the iPad, has changed everything. As we noted in June, "every major smartphone that has gone into production since the iPhone's release has, in some way, been a response to the iPhone itself."

This is even more true of tablet computing. From Samsung to HP, Acer to Asus, the tablets that currently exist in the marketplace are direct responses to the iPad. HP's TouchPad was perhaps the most direct descendent -- with everything from its form factor and scree resolution mimicking the iPad. We all know how that story has ended.

An Unknown Future

Steve Jobs leaves the company he co-founded in tremendous shape. With tens of billions of cash on hand, products that sell out as fast as they can be produced, and an ecosystem that continues to expand, the company's future footing is solid.

Moreover, one needs look no further than Disney to see that it is possible for corporations to continue to succeed, even without their visionary founder at the helm.

When Muppets battle OK Go, we all win

"As much as we?d like the Muppets Newsman to announce 'This just in, OK Go drop in with the Muppets!' and then have the guys fall from the sky on top of him (like that cow did that one time)," reads?Tuesday's post on OK Go's official blog, "it?s probably best to just say it: OK GO MADE A VIDEO WITH THE MUPPETS!"

That's right, kids! The two most actively meme-pursuing acts on the Interwebs battle it out in the new video for the "Muppet Show" theme song, OK Go's contribution to the upcoming Muppet-tribute LP, "The Green LP."

As you may recall, OK Go inadvertently started its viral precedent with the charming breakout video, "Here It Goes Again," performed on treadmills. Then there's the Rube Goldberg goodness of "This Too Shall Pass," "White Knuckles" (my favorite ? it features dogs and also a goat), and July's "All Is Not Lost," made in interactive goodness with dance troupe Pilobolus and Google?s Play With Chrome project.

All of the above are referenced in the new Muppet homage, as OK Go attempts to make yet another overly complicated contribution to its video library, only to be infiltrated and overthrown by Kermit, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, chickens?and even those old dudes in the balcony, who assert their viral dominance gained with the 2009 comeback cover of Queen's "Bohemian Rapshody."

"The Green Album" Muppet tribute is?also available, with musicians?My Morning Jacket, Andrew Bird, Weezer and others joining OK Go. NPR?is streaming that in its entirety?on Tuesday, and you can pre-order through iTunes.

"Perhaps most exciting of all, though, OK Go and The Muppets will perform together live on the 'Tonight Show' on August 31st," adds the OK Go blog. "?It?ll be like National-Be-Late-To-Work/Class-Because-You-Watched-OK-Go-on-the-Tonight-Show-on-April-28th Day but, in August instead. So make your plans now."

He then established a small record store in London and began recording artists like Genesis, The Sex Pistols and The Rolling Stones. From the success of a record label, Virgin became part of several products and is now known as one of the most recognizable brands in the world.

This Turkish immigrant owns one of the largest private mobile phone companies in Australia. He started with a small business entrepreneur with a mobile phone store in Brunswick, Melbourne. Now because he applied the most outrageous phone deals and marketing methods, his business took off despite numerous competitors. Crazy Johns eventually grew to a chain of 120 stores, with a staff of 600 people. Today, he has more than $300 million and was named one of the richest men in Australia.

In Iraq and Afghanistan, no one works ?behind the lines?

LAS VEGAS ? Soldiers fighting at the tip of the spear ? the leading edge of combat ? confront fighting, suffering and dying. But the success of those soldiers? operations depends on a huge network of service and support personnel who themselves face considerable and often overlooked war stress, says military sociologist Wilbur Scott of the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.

After returning from one or more deployments, National Guard combat service personnel ? including clerks, truck drivers, medics and supply officers ? displayed slightly less emotional resilience and described having experienced more stress while overseas and after returning home than their comrades engaged in combat, Scott reported August 20 at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association.

In particular, combat service personnel cited deployment stress triggered by exposure to danger, life-threatening situations and death.

Their responses reflect the changed nature of warfare, Scott suggested. In Iraq and Afghanistan, counterinsurgency efforts have replaced conventional warfare. ?While those in combat arms typically are thought of as being at the tip of the spear, this thinking applies more accurately to conventional settings rather than those encountered in Iraq and Afghanistan,? Scott said.

Combat units not only fight and kill but establish relationships with local officials, head local building projects and encourage trust in local governments. Service personnel work in the midst of operations, where they can encounter guerilla attacks or roadside bombs.

Poor coping upon returning from National Guard deployment ? whether among former service personnel or combat troops ? usually involved excessive alcohol drinking, abuse of prescription drugs and carrying a gun for protection, Scott said. Those behaviors are a potentially deadly mix.

Such findings underscore the need to provide programs that ease veterans back into civilian life, commented military sociologist Bradford Booth of ICF International, a private research and consulting firm in Fairfax, Va. Booth directed a pilot study of a government-funded program for 4,000 National Guard members returning home in 2007 from a year in Iraq.

In that study, those who attended three once-a-month training sessions ? which focused on mental health issues, strengthening marriages, financial counseling and other topics ? displayed signs of adjusting better than vets who declined to attend training.

Although traditionally regarded as ?weekend warriors,? National Guard volunteers now regularly get deployed for up to one year in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Scott and his colleagues surveyed 1,460 Army National Guard soldiers, including 969 deployed solely to war zones in Afghanistan or Iraq.

Whether combat or service personnel, soldiers returning from war zones were most likely to report having grappled with and found some meaning in their military experiences. Yet they also reported the most symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and the worst difficulties readjusting to civilian life.

?Experiencing personal growth from going through tough times doesn?t mean you?re doing well,? Scott said.

Improve Brain Function; Violence, and Immortality? | Naturopathic ...

Hola Martes!? Hello Tuesday.? First let me start off by thanking everyone that either sent me a card in the mail, posted on my wall, or came to my Birthday party hosted by my awesome friends Kenzie and Joy.? It truly is a great feeling knowing how much people care about you.?

Now, for the people that see me on a daily basis, I apologize, but I am going to talk about the Ancestral Health Symposium?again.?

The AHS was recorded and put up on Vimeo for FREE!!! That?s right, so even the people like myself that couldn?t spend half a grand to go are able to watch it.? A lot of the presenters talked about some pretty heavy science stuff but one presentation was quick and easy to follow.? Seth Roberts presentation on improving brain function with Flax oil, butter, and pork fat was very informative, and it was only twenty minutes.? He talks about his trouble sleeping, desire to improve brain function, as well something that I had not truly heard about but, improving gum health with Flax oil too.??

After Dr. Roberts speaks Tucker Max gives a presentation?WAIT?? What???!!! Tucker Max, the guy from I hope they serve Beer in Hell?? Yup, turns out, Tucker knows Seth Roberts and emailed him to tell him about a topic that was missing at the AHS.? No not Gut health, nutrition, exercise, anthropology, dentistry, and mood disorders???BUT VIOLENCE.

Now I must admit this presentation was very fun because you have some of the top PhDs and MDs in the world talking about their expertise and ancestral health, and then you have TM swearing like a sailor.? BUT, and this is a huge but, I believe the message or idea that Tucker Max brings up is an important one.? No he is not advocating violence but what he does advocate is learning MMA or Mixed Martial Arts.? He talks about cops trained in combat vs. untrained combat are less likely to use force.? He anecdotally talks about his training in MMA has made him a less violent person.? Max correctly brings up that almost every martial art has an accompanying philosophy to it which is usually one of ?the quiet warrior,? to NOT use ones strength to hurt another.? Finally I?d like to bring up a point that others have mentioned before which I think is interesting.? In society today, how threatened do you feel?? I?d say we probably feel pretty safe with our lives, etc.? Most of us have some form of shelter and are not starving.? And because of this what do we do?? We seek out ways to push our bodies to near death.?? I can only imagine but, if our own immortality was brought to our consciousness by being brought to our daily grind, would we not choose life??

CLEVELAND - Joe Thomas' goal when he entered the NFL was to spend his entire career with one team. The Cleveland Browns have made that possible.

The team locked up its steady Pro Bowl left offensive tackle on Monday by reaching agreement with Thomas on a seven-year contract extension.

Agent Peter Schaffer told The Associated Press on Monday night that the sides had been working on the deal for some time and that he was pleased his 26-year-old client will have long-term security with the Browns.

"This is all Joe wanted," Schaffer said.

Schaffer would not provide financial terms of the deal, but according to ESPN.com, citing anonymous league sources, the package is worth $84 million and includes $44 million in guaranteed money.

A Browns spokesman said the team has no announcement planned.

Thomas said he's thrilled to be staying in Cleveland.

"I am just so excited that I get to continue my career with the Cleveland Browns," Thomas said in an email to the AP. "I think something really special is happening here and it makes me very happy to get to start and finish my career in front of the best fans in the NFL. I love the city, fans, and the organization, and I just want to thank coach Pat Shurmur and general manager Tom Heckert for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to continue to play for this great and storied franchise."

Thomas, who has been selected to the Pro Bowl in each of his four NFL seasons, was entering the final year of the rookie contract he signed after being taken with the No. 3 overall selection in the 2007 draft. Last week, Thomas said he was excited about the direction the Browns were headed under president Mike Holmgren, Heckert and Shurmur, the Browns' first-year coach.

"There's now a very solid plan," Thomas said. "Everybody in this organization is rowing the ship in the same direction ? for once."

Schaffer said Thomas did not want to make a big deal about his extension, and chose to keep it private.

In only a few weeks of training camp, Thomas has been pleased with the Browns' improvement under Shurmur, his third head coach in less than five seasons.

"I've been really impressed," Thomas said. "The staff they have put together is phenomenal with the number of guys who have been head coaches in the league. A lot of different experiences, and they've coached in a lot of different styles, a lot of different schemes and systems. They're really focused on teaching and I think that's the thing that has impressed me most about coach Shurmur. He's a really hands-on teacher. He's on the field coaching (quarterback) Colt McCoy up for every read and every throw. He's talking to the receivers. He's talking to the offensive linemen and tight ends. He's throwing his two cents in there on defense.

"It's been great."

Thomas has started all 64 games and has not missed an offensive snap since joining the Browns, a fact not lost on a fan base that admires hard workers. The 6-foot-6, 312-pounder first endeared himself to Browns fans on draft day four years ago, when instead of joining the other top draft picks on stage at New York's Radio City Music Hall, Thomas instead went fishing with his father and some buddies in Wisconsin.

Thomas' work ethic and leadership skills are what set him apart for Shurmur.

"Joe is a steady guy, which you need from an offensive lineman," he said. "He's a guy that comes out here every day and works. Every once in a while he can be vocal, I wouldn't say that's his nature to just be exerting himself verbally. There's time within a practice or within a day when something needs to get said and he'll step right to the front and say it. I have a great appreciation for what he is as a player and a man."

Another thing a student should do is some research.? One should approach his or her college?s financial aid officer to see what these professionals might know.? Also, a student should never ignore smaller, private organizations, ranging anywhere from a church to private societies like the American Legion. Staying up to date with the latest facts about online degree will be valuable and can uncover more options for assistance.
