We have lived in our house for almost six years and have only painted walls up until this year. ?Call it young age, call it fear of messing up, call it incredibly silly, call it whatever you will??but we have busted out of our rut and are working on turning our house from boring to better. ?Now I could have said beautiful there, but since we are just started in the home improvement arena I know there is still a lot of room for improvement!
Over the weekend we redid our downstairs powder room. ?For those of you who do not know, a powder room is a half bathroom. I didn?t know that until we moved to Georgia. ?In Oregon we simply called that room the ?half bath.? ?Fancy that!
For our Powder Room Makeover we decided to use the?Rust-Oleum Cabinet Transformation kit?(purchased at Lowes).? My husband saw a commercial for it and we were both intrigued that you didn?t need to sand the cabinets. ?The Cabinet Testimonial Gallery on the ?Rustoleum site pretty was what sealed the deal for us! ?Sure, some primer and a bucket of paint may have done the same thing for a little less, but we wouldn?t change a thing!
Our bathroom before the redo was a product of contractor built materials in the year 2000. That boils down to one thing?..orangey cabinets. To clarify that orange is hideous and not at all attractive! ?The faucet had plastic handles. ?Need I say more? ?Definitely 12 years old!
My husband took down the light?.which made it very hard to see during this whole process. ?Ooops! ?Then he took out the mirror. ?We tried wire to no avail. ?He finally taped the entire mirror and used a pry bar and it popped off in one piece. ?Then came time to use the Rustoleum Cabinet product. ? The first step is to use a scrubber and some special solution and scrub (not sand) the wood. ?Then it dries for a few hours. ?Then you apply the first layer of paint (the color is added at the paint color of the hardware store if you are purchasing in-store). ?A second layer of paint is applied once the first has dried. ?Then a clear coat is applied and honestly that was the only part my husband said was hard. ?Getting an even layer without any blobs or globs was hard, but he handled it like a pro in the making!
We added a new Martha Stewart mirror found at Home Depot, a new light from Lowes, and a new faucet from Lowes as well. Hee hee, we use both of our home improvement stores!
The cost breakdown of our Powder Room Redo looks like approximately like this:
$78 Rustoluem Cabinet Kit (only used a fraction of this and will be able to do our other bathrooms with the leftovers!)
$50 Martha Stewart Mirror
$48 faucet
$98 lighting
$15 quart of paint (used the leftovers from the kitchen and only needed a quart)

$301 + rollers, and other incidentals.
We are not quite done though. ?My husband is going to put up crown molding. ?I need to find a towel holder and some art. ?I will update when these things happen?but don?t hold your breath!

We are so impressed with this project. ?It was very budget friendly. ?By repainting the cabinets we saved a ton of money.?We love sharing frugal ways to save money in all areas of life!
