Knowing the mechanics of the boat is necessary to steer it.

Other than safety and steering, dressing up properly is also important. Sailing clothing and sailing gear are parts of being a hobby sailor. The weather could be at extremes when at sea and proper clothes will give you protection from it.

Waterproof jackets and inshore warm jackets are important. Top siders and ocean boots are the perfect footwear. There are light colored polo shirts on the other hand for friendly weather. Women can wear leggings and men can wear trousers. For bad weather, just put any of those waterproof jackets.
