Roofing Home improvement

Everyone needs one over their head. The are two major styles for replacement roofing in the home improvement industry.

Metal has become popular in certain areas of the country in recent years. In many countries it is the dominant material. In North America, asphalt material is still the most popular.

Other materials that are used are wood shingle and slate.

Wood shingles are typically made of cedar and it lays over a waterproof membrane. It ages quickly and can be prone to blowing off in high winds. The only way that it can be cleaned back to a new looking state is by pressure washing.

I do not recommend any of my readers pressure washing a wood slate roof. One loose piece and you can fall off. This style is designed to age and fade, so don?t do anything to it, like cleaning it.

Slate is another material that is very old. Slate is used in Europe and it is quaint to look at. It is very heavy and the house truss system must be designed to hold this weight. It is very expensive and like wood slate, it will have a waterproof membrane underneath it in a modern home.

Slate should be the only material that you would ever need. I have never seen either slate or wood shake added on to an existing home as a replacement. The expense is too great.
