Steelers without RB coach Wilson for playoff game in Denver

The Pittsburgh Steelers running back coach Kirby Wilson is being treated for what reports call "severe" burns after escaping from a house fire in the wee hours of Friday morning.

Kirby Wilson, the Steelers running back coach will not be with the team as it travels to Denver for the wild card playoff game against the Broncos. The Pittsburgh-Post Gazette reported on the near tragedy.

"Firefighters went 141 Jameson Way at 2:42 a.m.(Seven Field) and saw smoke and flames from the street. They found Mr. Wilson, 50, burned "severely," said Jeffrey Schueler, director of public safety in nearby Cranberry.

He was taken to University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and as of this writing there is no update on Wilson's condition from the team or the hospital.

Art Rooney II, president of the club issued the following statement: "First and foremost our thoughts and prayers are with Kirby and his entire family," the statement reads. "We are saddened to hear about his unfortunate situation but we know that he has the best medical care in the country treating him. The entire organization is praying for Kirby to have a full recovery and we will be by his side through this difficult time"

Kirby Wilson was about to complete his fifth year with the Steelers as an assistant and has been credited with helping running back Rashard Mendenhall achieve his break-out season when he ran for over a 1000 yards in 2009.

The Steelers face the Denver Broncos on Sunday in Denver in the first round of NFL playoffs. Despite the Steelers better record of 12-4, they go on the road to face the 8-8 Broncos. Denver won its division and coming into the playoffs, the team is on a two-game winning streak.

Pittsburgh plays in the same division as the Baltimore Ravens who also achieved a 12-4 record, but held the tie-breaker over the Steelers as a result of winning both their head-to-head match ups this season.

The walking wounded on the team include QB Ben Roethlisberger, C Maurkice Pouncey and RB Rashard Mendenhall. Pouncey is iffy to start, no one can keep Big Ben from playing, but Mendenhall was placed on IR so Isaac Redman will start in his absence.

Then there is the case of Ryan Clark, who despite being uninjured won't make the trip. Clark suffers from a blood disorder that put him in a life threatening situation after he played with the Steelers in Denver a few years ago. It is affected by the altitude in the Mile High City.

It was announced that safety Ryan Mundy will fill in for Clark. A special teams player Mundy gets his big shot in the wild card game to show what he can do on the big stage.
