W.Va. man sentenced for role in armed robbery of credit union

A federal jury today convicted a West Virginia man of being the getaway driver during an armed robbery of a credit union in Hempfield last year during which a teller was shot in the chest.

Lamont Laprade, 33, of Huntingdon, faces a mandatory 10 years in prison and could get more when he is sentenced in May.

The jury deliberated about 90 minutes before finding him guilty of bank robbery, armed robbery and conspiracy to commit both crimes with a firearm. Mr. Laprade is a convicted felon and not allowed to have a gun.

The FBI and state police said he was the getaway driver for David Mathis of Crafton in the robbery of the Westmoreland County Federal Credit Union on Jan. 8, 2010, during which Mr. Mathis fired a shot that traveled through a computer and hit a teller in the chest. Agents said Mr. Mathis also hit another teller in the head with his gun. He is serving 25 years in federal prison.
