With coach hospitalized, shorthanded Ford upends DePaul Catholic

Minutes after a victory, Aaliyah Jones was thinking about Mike Toro.

?Right now I am about to call my coach and make sure he is alright,? the sophomore guard said.

The Falcons head men didn?t make the trip with the team to Paterson, N.J., for their game with DePaul Catholic. Toro, 24, took himself to Methodist Hospital after he felt heart palpitations while doing the book at the school?s JV boys basketball game.

?We always tell him [to take it easy],? Jones said. ?But it?s in a joking around matter, but now we got to tell him that we're not joking. You got to really get your health together.?

Bishop Ford's head coach Mike Toro missed the game Sunday because of health issues.

Prior to the game assistant coach Scott Wasserfall told the players that Toro had been released and it was just a panic attack, which has been a recurring problem.

Down their head coach and two starting forwards, Ford pulled it together for a 54-42 win over DePaul Catholic at A New Year?s Resolution at John F. Kennedy HS on Sunday. Brittany Lewis and Brittany Martin missed the game for personal reasons.

?We got this one for him,? junior guard Aaliyah Lewis said.

Toro has battled frequent panic attack of late and wasn?t feeling well in the first half of the Falcons overtime victory against Montclair on Friday at the event. Wasserfall said he did most of the standing and coaching until Ford went down 15 at the break and Toro sprung into action. The rigors of the season and the recent death of Nazareth coach Apache Paschall, his mentor, had hit him hard of late.

After the Bishop Ford administration postponed the team's game with Nazareth on Thursday, Toro want to find another way to honor Paschall and planned on donning a signature towel with ?RIP Apache? written on it against DePaul Catholic.

?I want to be there coaching,? Toro said Sunday after being released.

He would have been proud of his undersized squad. Jones dropped in 13 points, including three 3-pointers, and Aaliyah Lewis also had 13 for Ford (9-1). Backcourt mate Shanice Vaughan added 12 points. Brianah Ramos led DePaul Catholic (4-1) with 13 points and Jade Walker chipped in 10.

?I told them we are down two starters and one head coach, but I?m confident we can get it done with who is in this room,? Wasserfall said.

Without Martin and Brittany Lewis, Ford leaned heavily on its guard play against a bigger DePaul Catholic team. The Falcons used a 10-3 run to end the first quarter to grab a 16-10 lead and an Aaliyah Lewis three-point play in transition to give Ford, which connected on five 3-pointers, a 32-20 advantage at the half.

A Brittany Henry putback extended the advantage to 16 early in the fourth. Jones put the game away with a 3-pointer from the left corner to gave the Falcons a 51-37 advantage with 5:17 remaining in the game.

?Since we lost our two bigs we were going to have go small and run them,? Aaliyah Lewis said.

That they did, with Toro in mind.
